United Way works hard to make donating easy for you. In order to make online transactions secure, we must use a site which charges us slightly higher fees than other payment options. Here is a list of all of your payment options and related fees:
- Online payments: United Way is charged a 4% processing fee. Click here to donate online
- Direct Credit Card Payments: United Way is charged 2.5% to 3%. Payment this way can be made through an annual appeal response card, at an event, or by calling our CFO, Roseann Winter at 997-6700 x708.
- Securities: United Way is charged $7-$15 per trade.
- Check: United Way has very small bank processing fees which averages at .16%. Please make checks out to and send to our local lockbox:

IRS Rules on Year-end Gifts.
Contributions are deductible in the year made to the extent permitted by law. For example, donations charged to a credit card before the end of 2016 count for 2016, even if the credit card bill isn’t paid until 2017. Also, checks count for 2016 as long as they are postmarked 2016. To be safe, plan on making credit card donations before 5pm the last business day of the year.
It is United Way of Westchester and Putnam’s policy to liquidate all contributions of securities once received at its brokerage account. Due to market fluctuations, the value of the stock on the date the securities are donated and the date of liquidation/settlement vary; therefore all contributions are acknowledged using the value of the stock on the date of liquidation/settlement less the broker fees. In addition, United Way of Westchester and Putnam’s administrative processing fee applies only to designated contributions, as explained below apply.
Designated Contributions Fee Schedule
A handful of our donors elect to give to their favorite charity through a contribution to United Way. These contributions are subject to an administrative processing fee. The fee is 10% with a maximum of $250 per designation. This fee is waived when the donor is contributing to United Way of Westchester and Putnam at the same time.
