IRS Rules on Year-end Gifts.

Contributions are deductible in the year made to the extent permitted by law. For example, donations charged to a credit card before December 31st count toward that calendar year, even if the credit card bill isn’t paid until sometime in January. Also, checks postmarked on or before December 31st count toward that calendar year, regardless as to when they are received in our office. To be safe, plan on making credit card donations before 5pm the last business day of the year.

Stock Donations

It is United Way of Westchester and Putnam’s policy to liquidate all contributions of securities once received at its brokerage account. Due to market fluctuations, the value of the stock on the date the securities are donated and the date of liquidation/settlement vary; therefore all contributions are acknowledged using the value of the stock on the date of liquidation/settlement less the broker fees. In addition, United Way of Westchester and Putnam’s administrative processing fee applies only to designated contributions, as explained below apply.

Designated Contributions Fee Schedule

A handful of our donors elect to give to their favorite charity through a contribution to United Way. These contributions are subject to an administrative processing fee. The fee is 10% with a maximum of $250 per designation.
